DCR is currently seeking candidates for a Natural Areas Operations Steward position located on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. This position includes law enforcement duties and is part of a team of natural areas stewards managing the state natural area preserve system that protects outstanding examples of Virginia’s natural communities and provides habitat for rare plants and animals. Candidates selected for an interview will also be required to satisfactorily complete physical agility and mental health assessments. This position is based in Melfa (office) and Belle Haven (shop), Virginia, just north of the Town of Exmore.

Responsibilities include conducting natural areas management activities on 12 state preserves in the Coastal Region, with nine preserves located on the Eastern Shore and three in the Tidewater portion of southeast Virginia (Cities of Virginia Beach and Chesapeake). Specific duties include developing and implementing plans for preserve site security, public access, signage and access control; conducting visitor use monitoring; constructing and maintaining public use facilities; boundary line maintenance; conducting managed deer hunts; collecting GPS locations of preserve features, working with volunteers; assisting with natural resource management projects. The position carries out the law enforcement duties of a sworn DCR Conservation Officer on state natural area preserves, enforcing state laws and DCR regulations and developing/maintaining working relationships with local law enforcement organizations.

Minimum Qualifications

Working experience or knowledge of natural resource management, law enforcement principles and conservation of rare species. Experience with road and trail construction/maintenance, carpentry, GPS/GIS, mapping, boundary line maintenance, boat operation and maintenance, equipment operation and maintenance, facilities maintenance and public-use monitoring. Experience in supervising contractors, volunteers, assistants and seasonal employees and with administrating projects including budgeting and planning. Proficiency with personal computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets and databases. Ability to collect data and navigate terrain using global positioning systems (GPS) and to conduct analysis and produce maps with geographic information system (GIS) software.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with prescribed burning and pesticide application preferred

Degree preferred in forestry, wildlife, natural resources, recreation management, or a similar field.

Special Requirements

Individual is required to possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Virginia driver’s license and certifications in CPR and First Aid, Boater Safety, and other certifications as necessary.

Position requires incumbent to become a Sworn Conservation Officer. Sworn Conservation Officer requirements: Must be a US citizen; be at least 21 years old; H.S. grad or possess GED; pass a background investigation including fingerprint-based criminal history records check; possess or be able to obtain certification as a LE Officer in VA from the VA Dept. of Criminal Justice Service which includes accepting responsibilities related to being equipped with and using firearms. Successful applicants: shall not have a felony conviction(s) or have pled no contest to a felony or any offense that would be a felony if committed in VA; shall not have a misdemeanor conviction(s) involving moral turpitude, including larceny, concealment, uttering, embezzlement or perjury; shall not have conviction(s) for a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence; shall not have positive results on pre-employment drug screening.

Conditions of employment for this position require the successfully completion of a physical agility test and behavioral assessment. Also, successful completion of a physical exam is required to be identified as suitable for the position after being selected for employment.
