Day – 08 Hour (United States of America)
Job title: RLF Medical Interpreter Intern at SHC
Job Category: Relief – 200 hours, between mid-May and end of August.
Compensation: $34.47 per hour

Job Description Summary:
Join our Translation and Interpretation team at award-winning Stanford Health Care for a summer Medical Interpreter Internship. The internship takes place mid-May and the end of August, for a total of 200 hours.

This is a Stanford Health Care job.
Job duties are described below:

Performs medical and general interpreting/translating (either in-person or via phone or videoconference) for providers working with Limited English Proficient (LEP) patients and their families, in the emergency department, inpatient units and outpatient clinics, interpreting clinical conversations during patient assessment, review of treatment options, consent, diagnostic and therapy sessions, patient education, discharge, palliative care, family conferences, etc.
Acts as a cultural consultant to staff and as advocate for non-English speaking patients/families.
Assesses patient’s/family’s comprehension of “informed consent” as needed.
Advises physician/patient care staff of any need for clarification.
Engages doctors and hospital staff, raising awareness about protocol for accessing Interpreting Services. Conducts one on one provider education as needed. If directed, participates in consultations and in-services relating to medical interpretation/ translation, health cultural practice or pertinent issues with medical and healthcare staff personnel, and appropriate hospital departments or committees
Records interpreting sessions in the electronic medical record, and documents translation work.
Ensures access to hospital resources for non-English speaking patients and their families; including answering phone calls from unknown outside non-English speaking callers; triaging and orienting the caller for proper assistance inside or outside the hospital; and referring service needs to the appropriate resource for patients and families, including making referrals to medical staff, clinical social workers, patient relation, staff, chaplains, and ancillary staff for patients and/or families who could benefit from their assistance; or appropriate language resource phone interpreters, agency contractors, interns, and staff for spoken languages and sign language.
Works on translation of documents as assigned, including correspondence, medical histories, medical consent forms, medical procedures and instructions, legal documents, manuals, brochures, clinical research protocols and other pertinent documents as assigned by the Translation of Documents Supervisor.
Acts in accordance with all SHC and interpreter profession standards of ethics and protocols

The intern is expected to attend a SHC Human Resources New Employee Orientation (done virtually during the pandemic) followed by a three-day SHC Interpretation Translation onboarding. The intern’s summer schedule, daily internship activities and supervision, including translation of documents, shadowing staff interpreters, interpreting while being observed by staff interpreters, and doing solo interpreting, are coordinated by SHC Interpreter Services Training and Education Leads, in collaboration with staff healthcare interpreters acting as mentors, and the department’s Supervisors for Hospital Interpreters, Videoconference Interpreters, Translation of Documents, the Assistant Manager and the Manager.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree minimum. Enrolled in M.A. Translation and Interpretation program preferred.
Prior work experience is not required.

Physical requirements:

Ability for active listening, short memory retention and voicing messages between languages.
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time while interpreting in-person.
Ability to sit in front of computer monitor for extended periods of time while interpreting via video-conference.
Ability to use keyboard for extended periods of time while working on translation of documents.
