Full-Time Community Cat Program Manager
The Kauai Humane Society, Kauai’s only open admission animal shelter, is growing to provide positive outcomes for community cats. This position is responsible for working closely with the vet staff and the Executive Director to care for community cats while finding them placement as working cats. This position will be responsible for ensuring cats are healthy before transferring into general population catios, determining best placement regarding their behavior, providing ongoing observation/care to ensure the best welfare for the cats in the program, and ensuring that the Director of Shelter Medicine and Executive Director are kept appraised of the health and wellness of all animals.
Essential Job Functions:
Examines and processes cats received into the program, which includes properly completing necessary paperwork, & maintaining proper identification and records on all program cats
Works collaboratively with the vet staff to develop a strong understanding of the needs of the cats as well as administering vaccinations and medications and completing preliminary physical examinations
Works with the Director of Shelter Medicine to ensure the vet staff are appraised of the cats’ health and welfare
Oversees daily rounds of the cats in the Community Cat Program, conducting behavior assessment and health screenings, and is responsible for ensuring an accurate cat inventory
Inputs exam results and diagnosis/treatments into an online database (ShelterLuv) and completes animal medical records electronically
Oversees movement timelines from quarantine to general housing
Manages Cat Care Technicians and volunteers that provide care to the cats, but fills in as needed
Works with the Customer Service Manager for adoptions
Works with the Animal Programs Manager for transfer opportunities
Delegates effectively to both staff and volunteers
Keeps up to date on best practices and cat behavior
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of community/free-roaming/feral cat behavior, appropriate care, and how to set cats up for success.
Knowledge of feline diseases and recognizing their symptoms.
Knowledge of cat handling and trapping.
Ability to think outside the box and solve problems creatively.
Clear communication skills. Ability to establish and maintain relationships through telephone and email.
Ability to write reports and correspondence.
Ability to get along and work effectively as part of a team, with the public, management, fellow employees, volunteers, and other agencies and groups.
Basic computer skills using standard office programs such as Word, Excel, or similar programs. Ability to learn and use animal management database.
Ability to drive.
Willingness to go the extra mile.
Must have valid driver’s license.
High School graduate or GED equivalent is required; college degree is preferred.
2 years’ experience working with cats is preferred.
Experience with a working cat/barn cat/TNR program is preferred.
Must be able to stand, walk, bend and stoop frequently and daily to perform duties.
Must be able to perform prolonged strenuous physical activity, including lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds alone or up to 100 pounds with the help of fellow employees for short distances.
Must have a COVID-19 vaccination, unless medical exemption documentation is provided.
